Webber Naturals Plant-Based Omega-3 Algae Oil Softgels, 60 V Softgels
Description
Omega-3 from algae rather than fish. 60 vegan softgels. Worth knowing that this isn't a compromise or a substitute — algae is where the omega-3 in fish originates. Fish accumulate EPA and DHA by eating algae; this simply takes it from the source.
Who it suits
- Vegans and vegetarians
- Anyone with a fish or shellfish allergy
- People who dislike the aftertaste or repeat of fish oil
- Anyone concerned about ocean sustainability or contaminants in the marine food chain
Algae oil versus flaxseed
This distinction matters more than most plant-based omega-3 marketing admits. Flax, chia and walnut provide ALA, a different omega-3 that the body has to convert into EPA and DHA — and human conversion is inefficient, particularly to DHA. Algae oil supplies EPA and DHA directly, no conversion required. If you're vegan and want the same fatty acids fish oil provides, algae is the option that actually delivers them.
Practical notes
- Take with a meal containing some fat — these are fat-soluble
- No fishy aftertaste or repeat, which is a common reason people switch
- Algae is cultivated rather than harvested from the ocean, so no marine food-chain contaminants
- Check the label for the specific EPA and DHA amounts per softgel when comparing against fish oil
Before you start
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners — warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, clopidogrel or daily aspirin. Omega-3s affect platelet function regardless of whether they come from fish or algae, so the same caution applies. Discontinue before scheduled surgery and inform your surgeon.
Consult a healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a bleeding disorder.
