Fungi-Nail Anti-Fungal Solution, 30mL
Description
Fungi-Nail Anti-Fungal Solution, 30 mL, with a brush applicator. The active ingredient is undecylenic acid, a fatty acid with antifungal activity that's been used in topical products for decades.
What it actually treats
Undecylenic acid products treat fungal infections of the skin — athlete's foot, ringworm, and the skin around the nails. That's an important distinction to understand before you buy: despite the product name, over-the-counter topicals like this generally cannot cure an established fungal infection inside the nail plate.
Nail fungus (onychomycosis) sits under and within the nail, where topical solutions struggle to penetrate. Treating it properly usually requires a prescription — either a medicated nail lacquer or oral antifungal medication, and often several months of it. If your nail is thickened, discoloured, crumbling or lifting from the nail bed, see a doctor, pharmacist or foot care specialist rather than expecting this to resolve it.
Where it does help
- Athlete's foot, including between the toes
- Fungal infection of the skin surrounding the nails
- Relieving associated itching, scaling and cracking
- Alongside prescribed treatment, where a clinician has advised it
Using it
Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly first — fungus thrives in moisture, and skipping this step undermines the whole effort. Apply as directed on the package, usually twice daily. Continue for the full period stated even after things look better; stopping early is the most common reason these infections come back. Wash your hands after applying.
Preventing recurrence
Dry thoroughly between toes after showering, rotate footwear so shoes can dry out, change socks daily, and wear sandals in shared showers and pool areas. Without this, reinfection is likely regardless of which product you use.
Important
- If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a compromised immune system, see a healthcare professional before self-treating any foot infection. Foot problems in these situations can escalate quickly and warrant proper assessment.
- For external use only. Avoid eyes, mouth and broken or badly damaged skin
- Stop and seek advice if irritation develops, or if there's no improvement within the timeframe on the package
- See a doctor promptly for spreading redness, swelling, pus, warmth or increasing pain — those suggest bacterial infection, which needs different treatment
Our pharmacists can look at the affected area and tell you whether an over-the-counter product is appropriate or whether you need a prescription. Under Ontario's minor ailments program we can assess and prescribe for some fungal skin conditions directly.
