Buy this size if you're settled on it
Iron is a supplement worth buying in bulk once you know two things: that you're genuinely deficient, and that this particular form agrees with you. If either is still unknown, start with the 90-capsule bottle instead. Five months is a long commitment to a product you haven't tried.
Iron bisglycinate, briefly
The iron is chelated — bound to the amino acid glycine — rather than supplied as ferrous sulfate. That means less free iron loose in the gut, which is the source of most of the constipation and stomach upset conventional iron tablets are known for. Absorption is also better than from basic ferrous salts.
Getting it right over a long course
- Pair it with vitamin C — citrus, peppers, tomatoes or a supplement — to improve absorption
- Space it a couple of hours from tea, coffee, dairy and calcium supplements
- Note the expiry date against your rate of use; 150 capsules takes a while
- Arrange a retest partway through rather than working through the whole bottle on assumption
Read before you start
Test first — this matters more with a five-month supply than a one-month one. Ask your doctor for ferritin and a CBC to confirm deficiency, and to look into what's causing it. The body cannot efficiently excrete excess iron, so months of unnecessary supplementation is not harmless.
Store securely, well out of reach of children. Iron is among the leading causes of poisoning deaths in children under six, and a large bottle sitting in a cupboard is exactly the scenario to guard against. If a child swallows any, call the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017 immediately — don't wait to see whether symptoms appear.
Consult a healthcare professional if you have haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition, or take thyroid medication, certain antibiotics or other regular medicines.
Store cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, with the cap closed.
