NFH ALA R+ SAP, 90 Capsules
Description
Alpha-lipoic acid comes in two mirror-image forms, R and S. Only the R form occurs naturally in the body — the S form is a by-product of chemical synthesis. Standard ALA supplements contain roughly half of each. This one is the isolated, stabilized R-form, which is why it sits at a higher price point than NFH's standard ALA SAP.
Why stabilization is part of the name
Pure R-alpha lipoic acid is chemically fragile — left unstabilized it degrades and polymerizes fairly readily, which historically made it difficult to sell as a reliable product. The stabilized form used here holds its potency through normal storage, so what's on the label is closer to what's in the capsule at the end of the bottle.
How it works alongside other antioxidants
Like all alpha-lipoic acid, the R-form is soluble in both water and fat, so it isn't confined to one compartment of a cell. It also has a regenerating role — helping restore vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione and CoQ10 to their active forms after they've done their work. That network effect is why ALA rarely appears alone in a practitioner's protocol.
Choosing between this and standard ALA SAP
- R+ SAP (this one): the naturally occurring isomer only, stabilized; 90 capsules
- ALA SAP: conventional alpha-lipoic acid with added biotin; 60 capsules, lower cost
- If a practitioner has specified the R-form, they mean this one
- If you're new to ALA generally, the standard version is the usual starting point
Format and exclusions
90 capsules. Manufactured to pharmaceutical-grade standards with hypoallergenic ingredients — no gluten, dairy, soy, artificial preservatives or unnecessary fillers.
Important before you start
Talk to your doctor first if you take blood sugar medication. Alpha-lipoic acid in any form can lower blood glucose, so combining it with insulin or oral diabetes medication without supervision carries a real risk of levels dropping too far. The same caution applies if you have thyroid disease or take thyroid medication.
Consult a healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or scheduled for surgery. Stop use if any adverse reaction occurs. Store cool and dry, out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
