Vitamin B

B vitamins for energy metabolism, red blood cell formation and nervous system health, from B12 and folate to complete B-complex formulas. We carry Jamieson, NFH, Designs for Health, Bioclinic Naturals, AOR, Webber Naturals, Nature's Bounty and more, shipped across Canada.

Which B vitamin do you need?

  • Vitamin B12: found almost only in animal foods, so it's especially relevant for vegans and vegetarians, adults over 50 and people taking metformin or acid-reducing medication long term, who may absorb less B12 from food.
  • Folic acid / folate: Health Canada recommends that anyone who could become pregnant take a daily multivitamin with 0.4 mg of folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects.
  • B-complex: all eight B vitamins together; a convenient option if your diet is limited or you just want broad coverage.
  • Single B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, niacin, biotin): usually taken for a specific reason; check with a healthcare provider first.

Forms and formats

Cyanocobalamin is the most studied and affordable form of B12; methylcobalamin is an active form preferred by many practitioners. Sublingual tablets, lozenges and drops dissolve in the mouth and are easy to take. "Methylated" B-complex products use active forms such as L-5-MTHF instead of folic acid.

Good to know: high-dose biotin can interfere with some blood tests, including thyroid and heart tests. Tell your doctor or lab if you take it.
