The main categories
- Omega-3 (EPA and DHA) — the most studied nutrient in this area. What matters is the EPA/DHA content, not the total fish oil weight: a 1000 mg softgel may contain only 300 mg of actual omega-3s. Compare the combined EPA+DHA figure on the label. Vegan algae-based options provide the same fatty acids without fish.
- CoQ10 — levels decline with age, and notably in people taking statin medication. Ubiquinol is the reduced form and is generally better absorbed than ubiquinone, though it costs more.
- Magnesium — involved in normal muscle function, including cardiac muscle. See Magnesium for the different forms.
- Plant sterols — taken with meals, as they work by competing with dietary cholesterol for absorption.
Reading an omega-3 label
This is where most of the value difference sits. Two bottles at similar prices can differ two- or three-fold in delivered EPA and DHA. Also worth checking:
- Concentration — higher-concentration oils mean fewer softgels per day.
- Third-party testing for oxidation and heavy metals. Rancid fish oil is common and unpleasant.
- Enteric coating or liquids if fishy repeat is a problem for you.
Supplements complement, not replace
Nothing on this page substitutes for the basics — physical activity, diet, not smoking, and managing blood pressure and cholesterol with your healthcare provider. Supplements are an addition to that, not an alternative.

This is an area where medical guidance matters. High-dose omega-3s can affect bleeding time and interact with anticoagulants; CoQ10 interacts with warfarin; and plant sterols aren't suitable for everyone. If you take heart or blood pressure medication, or have a diagnosed cardiovascular condition, speak with your healthcare provider before adding supplements. Seek immediate medical attention for chest pain, shortness of breath or irregular heartbeat.
