OptiFer® Alpha Heme Iron Supplement 11 mg, 90 Tablets
Description
The 90-tablet bottle of OptiFer Alpha, 11 mg heme iron per tablet — three months at one daily, and the size that makes sense once you know heme iron suits you.
Why the larger size fits iron in particular
Rebuilding depleted iron stores is slow work. Haemoglobin may respond within weeks, but ferritin — the actual reserve — often takes three to six months to recover, and stopping as soon as you feel better is why so many people find themselves deficient again a year later. A three-month bottle matches the realistic timeline better than a 30-day one, and works out cheaper per tablet.
What heme iron does differently
Heme iron is the form present in meat, absorbed through a dedicated pathway rather than the one used by iron salts. That pathway is largely unaffected by tea, coffee, calcium and dietary phytates — the things that interfere with ordinary iron tablets and force awkward timing rules. It's also generally gentler on the digestive system, because it's unabsorbed iron salts sitting in the gut that cause most of the constipation and nausea people associate with supplementing iron.
On the 11 mg figure
Don't compare it directly against the 65 mg or 100 mg on conventional iron labels. Those numbers reflect a form of iron of which only a small fraction is absorbed. What matters is your ferritin trend over months, not the number printed on the bottle.
Read before you start
Test before you supplement. Ask your doctor for ferritin and a CBC. Beyond confirming deficiency, it's worth establishing why iron is low — that's a question with answers ranging from diet to blood loss, and some of them need addressing directly. Iron accumulates in the body and has no efficient excretion route, so taking it unnecessarily carries real risk.
Retest partway through a long course rather than continuing indefinitely on assumption.
Keep well out of reach of children — accidental iron ingestion is a leading cause of poisoning deaths in children under six. If a child swallows any, call the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017 straight away.
Check with a healthcare professional if you have haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition, or take thyroid medication, certain antibiotics or other regular medicines. Contains a meat-derived ingredient — not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Store cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
