Biotène Oralbalance Moisturizing Gel for Dry Mouth Relief, 42g
Description
Biotène Oralbalance is a moisturising gel for dry mouth — a lubricating layer applied directly to the gums, tongue and inside of the cheeks when saliva isn't doing the job. 42 g tube.
Dry mouth is more than an inconvenience
Saliva does real work: it buffers acid, clears food debris, and carries minerals that help remineralise tooth enamel. When it's persistently reduced (xerostomia), the consequences follow fairly reliably — rapid tooth decay, gum problems, oral thrush, difficulty with speaking, chewing and swallowing, and altered taste. Managing it isn't cosmetic.
Common causes
Medication is the most frequent one — several hundred drugs list dry mouth as a side effect, including many antidepressants, antihistamines, blood pressure medicines, diuretics and bladder medications. Others include radiation therapy to the head and neck, Sjögren's syndrome, diabetes, and simply taking multiple medications at once.
If your dry mouth started after a medication change, speak to your pharmacist. Sometimes an alternative with a milder effect exists, or the timing of doses can be adjusted. That's worth exploring alongside symptomatic relief rather than instead of it.
Using the gel
Apply a small amount to the tongue and spread it around the mouth with the tongue, or apply directly with a clean finger to the gums and inner cheeks. Use as often as needed through the day, and applying before bed is particularly useful — saliva production drops naturally overnight, which is when many people find dry mouth most disruptive.
Alongside it
- Sip water regularly and keep some by the bed
- Sugar-free gum or lozenges stimulate whatever saliva flow remains
- Limit caffeine and alcohol, and avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes — they dry the mouth further
- See your dentist more often. Dry mouth substantially raises the risk of decay, and earlier intervention is far cheaper than restorative work
When to seek advice
Persistent dry mouth deserves proper assessment rather than indefinite self-management — particularly if it came on suddenly, comes with dry eyes or joint pain, or is accompanied by mouth sores, white patches or difficulty swallowing. Ask your dentist, doctor, or our pharmacy team.
Store at room temperature with the cap closed. Keep out of reach of children.
