On needle length
Shorter needles (4-6 mm) have become the more common recommendation for most adults, since they reduce the chance of injecting into muscle rather than fat. 8 mm remains appropriate for some people depending on body composition, injection site and technique — including whether a skin fold is used. If you're unsure which length is right for you, ask your pharmacist or diabetes educator before switching. It genuinely affects how your medication absorbs.
Using them safely
- Use a new needle for every injection — reusing them blunts the tip, hurts more, and increases the risk of tissue damage and infection
- Remove the needle from the pen after each use; leaving it attached can allow air in or medication to leak out
- Rotate injection sites to avoid lipohypertrophy (fatty lumps), which makes absorption unpredictable
- Dispose of used needles in an approved sharps container — never in household waste. Most Ontario pharmacies, including ours, accept full sharps containers for safe disposal
Compatibility check
