Antacid and Heartburn
Heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion relief from Tums, Gaviscon, ENO, Pepcid, Nexium, Pepto-Bismol, Phillips' and Alka-Seltzer, from fast-acting antacids to 24-hour acid reducers, shipped across Canada.
Which heartburn product is right for you?
- Antacids (Tums, ENO, Phillips' Milk of Magnesia): neutralize stomach acid within minutes. Best for occasional heartburn.
- Alginates (Gaviscon): form a protective layer on top of stomach contents that helps keep acid from rising into the esophagus; useful for reflux after meals and at night.
- H2 blockers (Pepcid AC, famotidine): reduce acid production for up to 12 hours, and can be taken before a meal you know triggers heartburn.
- Proton pump inhibitors (Nexium 24HR, omeprazole): for frequent heartburn on 2 or more days a week, taken once daily as a 14-day course. Don't repeat courses more often than the label allows without talking to a doctor.
- Bismuth (Pepto-Bismol): for upset stomach, indigestion, nausea and diarrhea.
Good to know
Pepto-Bismol contains a salicylate and some effervescent products contain ASA, so check the label if you're allergic to ASA, take blood thinners, or are buying for a child or teen. Smaller meals, avoiding late-night eating and raising the head of your bed can also help.
See a doctor if heartburn happens more than twice a week for several weeks, or if you have trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, black stools or chest pain. Chest pain can be a sign of a heart problem: call 911 if it's severe or spreads to your arm, jaw or back.
