Where 6 mm sits
Needle length is not a one-size-fits-all decision, and 6 mm remains a common choice — particularly for people who've used it successfully for years, or where a practitioner has specifically recommended it. With a 6 mm needle, a skin fold or an angled insertion is sometimes advised depending on the injection site and your build.
If you're not sure whether 6 mm or 4 mm is right for you, ask before you switch. Getting this wrong means injecting into muscle instead of fat, which changes absorption speed — with insulin that can matter significantly. Our pharmacists are happy to go through it with you.
Standard practice
- One needle per injection — reuse blunts the tip and increases infection risk
- Remove the needle from the pen after each use
- Rotate sites to avoid fatty lumps and keep absorption predictable
- Hold for roughly ten seconds before withdrawing to deliver the full dose
- All used needles into an approved sharps container. We accept full containers for safe disposal
