A powdered prebiotic fibre made from larch bark. Arabinogalactan — properly D-galacto-ʟ-arabinan — is extracted from Larix species and dissolves cleanly into water or any drink, without the thickening or gel texture that puts people off psyllium and similar fibres.

Prebiotic, not probiotic

The distinction matters when you're choosing between them. Probiotics add bacteria; prebiotics feed the bacteria already living in your gut. Arabinogalactan is fermented in the large intestine by resident bacteria including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, and that fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids — butyrate, acetate and propionate — which are the main energy source for the cells lining the colon.

Dose and mixing

4 g of arabinogalactan per scoop, 200 g per tub — roughly 50 servings. It's close to tasteless and mixes into water, juice, coffee or a smoothie without altering texture much, which is the practical advantage of this fibre over bulkier options.

Starting sensibly

With any fermentable fibre, begin with less than a full scoop and build up over a week or two. Going straight to a full dose commonly causes gas and bloating — not harmful, but avoidable. Increase your water intake alongside it.
