Andrographis paniculata is a bitter herb — genuinely bitter, which is why one of its traditional names translates as "king of bitters." It has a long record in Ayurvedic and traditional Asian herbal practice, and it's become one of the more commonly stocked botanicals in Canadian pharmacies through the winter months.

Standardized to andrographolides

The compounds that define andrographis are the andrographolides, and this extract is standardized to contain a set level of them. That matters more here than with many herbs: raw andrographis powder varies substantially in andrographolide content depending on growing conditions and which part of the plant is harvested, so an unstandardized product tells you very little about what you're actually taking.

How it's usually used

Andrographis is typically taken as a short course during the colder months rather than continuously year-round. Follow the dosage and duration on the label, or your practitioner's direction — this isn't a herb most protocols call for indefinitely.
