The white button mushroom is the one in every supermarket produce aisle — the most consumed mushroom in North America by a wide margin. It gets far less attention in the supplement world than reishi or lion's mane, which is slightly odd given how well characterized it is nutritionally. This is a concentrated extract of it.

The extract specification

A 5:1 extract standardized to 30% polysaccharides, providing 15% beta-glucans. Those numbers are worth reading carefully, because "mushroom supplement" covers an enormous range of quality. Many products on the market are grown-on-grain mycelium powder with a beta-glucan content in the low single digits. A stated beta-glucan percentage is the specification that separates a real extract from starch.

Hot water extraction

The beta-glucans in mushrooms sit inside chitin cell walls that human digestion doesn't break down efficiently. Hot water extraction ruptures those walls and pulls the polysaccharides into solution — it's the traditional method for a reason, and it's why an extract differs meaningfully from dried mushroom powder.

What's naturally present

Agaricus bisporus naturally contains ergosterol (the fungal precursor to vitamin D), dietary fibre, polyphenols and folates alongside its polysaccharide content.
