Berberine
Short answer: berberine is a plant alkaloid found in goldenseal, barberry and related species. The capsules below differ mainly in how much berberine each capsule holds and how many you take a day, so compare the label before you choose.

How to choose
- Amount per capsule: 300 mg capsules are taken several times a day; 500 mg capsules hold more per capsule. Check the daily total on the label, not just the number on the front.
- Licensed in Canada: look for the NPN on the bottle. Berberine-Evail lists NPN 80077030. Our guide shows how to check an NPN on Health Canada's database.
- Labelled uses: Berberine-Evail's label says it helps to support healthy glucose and lipid metabolism. Read each product's own label for its approved uses.
When to talk to a doctor or pharmacist first
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding: the NFH Berberine SAP and Berberine-Evail labels say not to use them, and the NFH Berberine SAP 500 mg page says it is not recommended.
- You take diabetes, cholesterol or other prescription medication.
- You have a kidney disorder or blood pressure problems (NFH Berberine SAP label).
