Astaxanthin is the pigment that turns salmon flesh pink and lobster shells red. It's a carotenoid, related to beta-carotene and lutein, and it's one of the more interesting antioxidants because of where it sits in a cell — spanning the membrane, with reach into both the water-based and fat-based parts of it. NFH supplies 12 mg per softgel, sourced from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, which is where the pigment originates in the food chain before fish accumulate it.

Natural source, not synthetic

Astaxanthin can be manufactured synthetically for aquaculture feed, but this is the algae-derived form. That's the version used in most human research, and the reason the softgels are deep red without any added colour.

The softgel matters here

Astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so it needs dietary fat present to be absorbed properly. Delivering it in an oil-based softgel handles that automatically — one reason astaxanthin capsules and powders generally don't compare well to softgels.
