Carnitine's job in the body is transport: it carries fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they're burned for energy. Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetylated form, and the reason it's sold separately from plain L-carnitine is that it crosses the blood-brain barrier considerably more readily.

The acetyl group does two things

Beyond improving passage into the brain, the acetyl group itself is a usable building block — it can contribute to acetylcholine synthesis, acetylcholine being the neurotransmitter most associated with memory and attention. That's the distinction between ALCAR and ordinary carnitine in practice, and why the two aren't interchangeable.

Stimulant-free by nature

This isn't a nootropic in the caffeine sense — there's no stimulant in it and nothing that produces an acute effect you'd feel within the hour. It works on mitochondrial energy pathways, which is a slower and less dramatic mechanism than a stimulant, and the reason it's usually assessed over weeks.

When people take it

Morning or early afternoon is the common pattern. Some people find ALCAR taken late in the day interferes with getting to sleep, so it's generally not an evening supplement.
