5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is extracted from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a West African climbing shrub. It sits one step before serotonin in the body's synthesis pathway — tryptophan converts to 5-HTP, and 5-HTP converts to serotonin. Each capsule provides 100 mg.

Please read this before purchasing

Do not take 5-HTP with antidepressants or other serotonergic medication. This includes SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tricyclics, triptans for migraine, tramadol, lithium, dextromethorphan and St John's Wort. Combining them can cause serotonin syndrome — a serious and occasionally life-threatening reaction. If you take any medication affecting serotonin, do not use this product without explicit direction from the prescribing physician.

This is not a treatment for depression, anxiety, or any mental health condition, and is not a substitute for prescribed medication. Never stop or reduce a prescribed antidepressant to try a supplement instead. If you are struggling with your mood or sleep, please speak with your doctor — effective help exists, and it starts with a proper assessment.

Why the precursor rather than serotonin itself

Serotonin taken orally can't cross the blood-brain barrier, so supplementing it directly wouldn't achieve anything centrally. 5-HTP does cross, which is the entire reason it's the form sold.
