How to Use
Shake well before using. Measure each dose carefully with a proper medicine measuring device rather than a household spoon to help ensure correct dosing. This syrup is intended for oral use only and is generally taken at night when cold and flu symptoms are making it harder to rest. Customers should read the entire package before first use and follow label directions exactly. It is essential not to combine this product with other cold, flu, cough, or pain medicines unless a pharmacist or doctor has confirmed that the ingredient combination is safe. Because this is a multi-ingredient product, checking other medications for overlapping ingredients is crucial.
Dosage
Adults and children 12 years and older should take 2 tablespoons, which equals 30 mL, every 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 8 tablespoons, or 120 mL, in 24 hours. Do not give this product to children under 12 years of age unless a doctor specifically advises it. Do not take more than the recommended dose. Taking extra medicine will not improve results and may increase the risk of serious side effects, especially because this formula contains acetaminophen.
Precautions
This product should not be used with other medicines that contain acetaminophen, or with other cough and cold products that contain similar active ingredients. People who are unsure whether another medicine contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, pseudoephedrine, guaifenesin, or an antihistamine should ask a pharmacist before use. Avoid use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, also called MAOIs, or within 2 weeks of stopping an MAOI.
Speak with a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, glaucoma, liver disease, kidney disease, breathing problems, chronic lung conditions, or difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate. Extra caution is also important for older adults and for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid alcohol while using this syrup, as it may increase drowsiness and may also increase the risk of serious acetaminophen-related harm. Do not drive or do tasks requiring alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
Side Effects
Like many nighttime cold and flu products, Benylin Extra Strength Cold & Flu Night Syrup may cause drowsiness, which is one reason many consumers choose it for evening use. Some people may also experience dizziness, nervousness, excitability, upset stomach, or trouble sleeping. Dry mouth or mild stomach discomfort may also occur in some users. Serious risks can happen if the medicine is misused, especially in overdose situations or when combined with other acetaminophen-containing products.
Stop use and seek medical advice right away if symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, such as rash, skin redness, or blisters. Medical attention is also important if symptoms get worse, fever lasts more than 3 days, symptoms last more than 5 days, sore throat pain lasts more than 2 days, or thick yellow or green phlegm develops. In case of overdose, contact a poison control centre or doctor immediately, even if there are no obvious symptoms.
